Serological typing of Staphylococcus epidermidis strains by the serum-soft agar technique.

چکیده
Antisera to five different diffuse forms of Staphylococcus epidermidis were prepared in rabbits as a mean of serological differentiation of S. epidermidis strains. These antisera converted the growth types of the homologous strains from diffuse to compact form in serum-soft agar but did not convert the heterologous strains. The converting activities of the antisera were absorbed out with homologous organisms and not by heterologous strains, indicating the specific serological properties of these strains. Further, the converting activity was absorbable with cell surface substance extracted by sonic oscillation and was not absorbed with cells from which this surface substance had been removed. With these factor sera and the serum-soft agar technique, S. epidermidis strains were differentiated, and it was found that 102 of 116 strains or 87.9% were typable. Within the 102 typable strains, 49 and 53 typed as monovalent and polyvalent, respectively. No correlation between source and strain types of S. epidermidis was found.

Transduction of tetracycline resistance in Staphylococcus epidermidis.
Fourteen Staphylococcus epidermidis strains were biotyped according to the scheme of Baird-Parker and tested for their sensitivities to S. epidermidis typing phages. Tetracycline-susceptible strains were tested for the capacity to be transduced to resistance. Five strains, all of biotype 1, were lysed by one or more phages. Five of eight biotype 1 strains were transduced to tetracycline resista...
متن کاملPhenotypic Investigation of Biofilm Formation and the Prevalence of icaA and icaD Genes in Staphylococcus epidermidis Isolates
Background and Aims: The most important factor for pathogenicity of Staphylococcus epidermidis is the ability to produce biofilm. Identification of biofilm-forming strains using an appropriate method and recognizing the mechanisms of biofilm formation can help understand the proper use of artificial medical equipment and prevent increased drugs resistance . The aim of this study was to 1) evalu...
متن کاملUse of outer surface protein repeat regions for improved genotyping of Staphylococcus epidermidis.
Staphylococcus epidermidis is an important nosocomial pathogen, but little is known of its epidemiology. Accurate, reproducible typing systems would greatly improve epidemiologic investigations of S. epidermidis. The sequence-based typing technique most recently evaluated, multilocus sequence typing (MLST), often lacks discrimination and can be expensive. PCR and sequence-based analyses of the ...
متن کاملEvaluation of a new bacteriophage set for typing of Staphylococcus epidermidis strains.
A new set of typing phages was evaluated for typing 821 Staphylococcus epidermidis strains isolated from normal human skin and from acne lesions. This method was compared with two different systems for biochemical differentiation of S. epidermidis. Distinct subgroups of cocci, which differed in phage susceptibility as well as in biochemical properties, were found. A tentative subdivision of S. ...
متن کاملDissimilarity of ccrAB gene sequences between methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus among bovine isolates in Korea
The sequences of the ccrAB genes from bovine-, canine- and chicken-originating methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus (S.) epidermidis (MRSE) and bovine methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus (S.) aureus (MRSA) were compared to investigate the frequency of intra-species horizontal transfer of the staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) complex. Nineteen MRSE strains were isolated from bovin...
